Ram (6th of January, 2009)

By Alexandra Lupu

The sensitive, innocent and home-loving Ram (The Sheep, The Goat) – the born romantic and artist

"The truly creative mind in any field is no more than this: a human creature born abnormally, inhumanly sensitive. To him, a touch is a blow, a sound is a noise, a misfortune is a tragedy, a joy is an ecstasy, a friend is a lover, a lover is a god, and failure is death. Add to this cruelly delicate organism the overpowering necessity to create, create, create - so that without the creating of music or poetry or books or buildings or something of meaning, his very breath is cut off from him. He must create, must pour out creation. By some strange, unknown, inward urgency he is not really alive unless he is creating."

- Pearl S. Buck

Personality: People born in the year of the Ram are the artists of the Chinese zodiac par excellence, keenly creative and imaginative, possessing genuine art-related skills, the high idealism and amazing poetic sensitivity of famous masters and craftsmen. Within every individual born under the auspices of this domestic, delicate and quiet animal lies the seed of a potential great artist, all they have to do is to explore and fructify the gift they have been naturally blessed with. However, let us not jump to conclusions and think that each and every Ram will become the next Mozart, Michelangelo or Shakespeare, as this would come as very distressing to the rest of us all, common people and mere mortals! I simply want to emphasize that such an extremely responsive, emotional and talented individual has all it takes - including the grain of genius - for earning a reputation as a man of arts and letters, while if he manages or not to reach this status is up to him.

Individuals under this sign represent the feminine, the Yin side of human psyche par excellence. Male or female, someone who has been born under the auspices of the Sheep is very delicate, sweet and kind, emotional, affectionate and romantic, endearing, open and sincere. Even if not very loquacious and not at all gossipy, they have a good sense of humor and, in fact, a good sense of just about anything. The genuinely graceful and lithe Ram is a very elegant and respectful person with very refined tastes. From the stylish outfits to the aristocratic manners and impeccably self-decorated homes, all reflects their dashing and sophisticated nature.

Such distinguished individuals are very fond of art, culture and nature and, as a matter of fact, of anything that brings beauty into the ordinary life. And this is the major reason why Sheep people are so indifferent and 'clumsy' when it comes to daily tasks and responsibilities - reality is too monotonous, weary and rough to appeal to these poetic and dreamy souls, while living in their own world of emotions and ideas is the most appropriate.

Sheep people are quiet, calm and warm-natured. It is a real pleasure to have a conversation - and not on trivial topics such as domestic and daily tasks - with such brilliant, polite and considerate individuals. They are also great as friends or life partners, because they are delicate, mild, easy-going and kind. They belong to the nurturer and caregiver type, therefore they are very gentle, altruistic, affectionate, compassionate and soothing. They put first the problems of people they care for and only afterwards would they be concerned about their own, are greatly supportive and know how to make anyone feel at ease, as they themselves possess an easy-going nature and wide-ranging mind.

Contrary to the belief that they are lonely individuals just because they are generally quiet, tranquil and not very talkative, those born under the sign of the Ram are in fact sociable creatures who simply want to get accustomed to new people and get to know a 'territory' before they become open and friendly. They love to be part of groups, to take part in discussions, to be surrounded by people of all types, as long as they do not have to be leaders and the focus is not on them. Still, they make wonderful intelligent, ingenious and devoted team people. One will never see a Ram who enjoys being in the limelight, but one will often meet a Sheep as the most praised and respected team member. They are rather shy, discrete and private individuals and it is not in their nature to stand out and try to impress the others with flamboyant gestures or bombastic speeches. On the other hand, they are supportive, open-minded and patient natures who get along very well with all kinds of people.

It would be completely wrong to think that people born in the year of the Ram would rather keep on the 'margins' of a group simply because they are common, ordinary and have nothing to say or offer. Indeed, they despise aggressiveness of any kind (except for passive-aggressiveness sometimes, especially when they become too whiny and moody) and do not feel comfortable in confrontations and conflicts, preferring to pull back and wait until the 'storm' is over. They do not stand up or argue, not even when it comes to defending their own status or rights, because they find it useless by all means - they do not care how the others see them, as anyone is free to choose whatever he or she considers to be right.

To illustrate it for you, let us make a short insight into a Sheep individual's mind: "Someone does not like me! Oh, OK, it is his choice. If one has a low opinion on me, then it is his total loss because s/he does not know how to appreciate a good and hearty man when s/he sees one. Why should I strive to impress him in any way - besides the fact that I am a bit leisurely and lazy- , as long as such a person is not capable of realizing it on his own?"

Furthermore, people born in the year of the Ram do not want to attract all attention upon them simply because they are not interested in anything which has to do with earthly achievements which are perishable, therefore inevitably exposed to decay, such as fame, glory or material gains. To climb up to the top of the social ladder, to be in a position of leadership, to become very influent or as rich as Croesus - what's the point for all these? They will all eventually be lost, anyway. Consequently, never offer money or power to a Sheep when trying to convince such an individual into doing something. They will only laugh - and very ironically, I might add - in your face and continue to walk their path towards higher spheres.

The delicate and hypersensitive Ram makes a habit out of daydreaming and from trying to find answers to the philosophical questions which are meant to never be solved. Even if touching the earth with the soles of the feet while walking, their head is high in the clouds and they would never come down from there, no matter what. These individuals are the most idealistic of all the Chinese 'menagerie' and they find earthly, material things worthless and valueless.

The spiritual and emotional pursuits and achievements are highly important and, in fact, the only ones that are important. As a matter of fact, most of those born under the influence of the Ram lead their whole lives in the 'ivory tower' where they voluntarily lock themselves and where everything is wonderful, there are no worries, troubles and also no distress or grief. When, due to various reasons, Ram people have to return to the obnoxious real life, they become extremely moody, difficult and sullen. Very sensitive and delicate, they may also easily become melancholic, nostalgic and blue. Gloomy depression and anxiety is not a stranger to them, also.

However, they will find it hard - these absolute idealists - to deal with and survive all the ignorance, selfishness, hypocrisy, malice, slyness which dominate modern society. Individuals born in the year of the Ram cry easily, at the drop of the hat, simply because they are very delicate and sensitive. Furthermore, they usually see only what is best in people and in themselves. This is why when offended, hurt, deceived or facing treachery, they are very likely to experience anxiety, depression and related emotional and affective disorders and they need to feel safe, loved and protected.

Another major downside of the Sheep relates to their indecisive and hesitant nature. They do not have the ambition of the Rat, Ox or Dragon, as they may become very quickly bored by a certain situation, project etc. and move on towards a new, more exciting one while leaving the former half-way finished. However, to look on the bright side, these poetic and sensitive individuals may not be too persevering or zealous, but at the same time this keeps them from being as dull and selfish as their counterparts become at some point.

In all their relationships, Ram individuals are very caring, soothing, devoted, open and faithful. However, they can become whimsical, moody or irritably whiners, which makes it sometimes very difficult to live daily next to such a person who 'requires' permanent caressing, stroking and affection. They are 'givers' and they are capable of giving up everything for those they care for, but in return they need to feel secure and appreciated by their family, friends, life partners. They need a steady 'background' to hang on to, because their calm and serene natures would be confused and frightened by continual change, rush and trepidation.

On the other hand, Ram individuals are among the most suited in the Chinese 'menagerie' to settle down and form a family with. Even if not very good when it comes to cleaning up the house or dealing with household tasks, they are great with children, offering them love, support and an exquisite education. They will also have an excellent behavior with their spouses, as they are very loving, tender, understanding and gentle.

Rams are also indolent, disorganized, lazy and not at all practical, therefore they are 'faulty' when it comes to household tasks. Ask such an individual to paint, carve or sculpt something for you - they will craftily and adroitly do it in no time. But try asking the same individual to clean up the house, dust the bookcase or even wash the vessel - and then you will see how clumsy they are and how bored and languid they become! These people literally hate regular monotonous jobs and they prefer finding someone to offer them material sustenance rather than having to actually strive 7-8 hours a day in order to earn themselves a decent living. If they have all the amenity and facility they need, individuals born under this particular sign would gladly lead their entire life and work (as an artist, that is!) under the protection of the almighty Maecenas - the wealthy patron of the arts.

The Ram and Love

For the delicate and not very self-confident Sheep love and family are the ultimate goals in life. For these sweet-natured creatures 'to live' is the synonymous of 'to love', because without love there would definitely be no reason to live for -in as much as Sheep individuals are concerned, happiness as the supreme state a human being can feel is actually the subsidiary of love, seen as the perfect union of two souls 'embodying' Plato's androgyny.

Nurturers and givers, individuals born in the year of the Ram care very much about their family and since their early years they fantasize about settling down and knowing domestic happiness. And indeed, they are great both as spouses and parents - they are kind, gentle, altruistic, soothing, supportive and affectionate. Sometimes too dependable and clingy, these flaws of character can be easily overlooked when you think about the immense amount of love, tenderness and respect these people epitomizing family bonds and loyalty are capable to offer to those they care for.

When it comes to love relationships, the Ram is maybe the most romantic of all signs in the Chinese astrology. If you want to conquer a male or female born under the auspices of this mild domestic animal, you should know that tricky mind games or fiery adventures will never work; moreover, they will make the steady and demure Sheep despise you - though their pure and childish heart scarcely knows negative feelings like this.

On the other hand, dinners by candlelight or romantic escapades in nature and lovemaking under the moonlight or in a bed of roses will make them fall in love with you instantly. These melancholic and nostalgic natures crave for safety, security and attention throughout all their lives - at first from their parents and then from their partners. Indeed, they are dependable and sometimes a bit difficult to live with, especially when becoming whimsical or whiny, but their warm heart which will beat only for you once you win it makes for all these flaws which, after all, characterize the imperfect human nature.

Being in a love relationship or settling down with a person born in the year of the Ram means living a calm, quiet and serene domestic life. They will 'cater' to all your needs, be there through thick and thin for you, no matter what, and give up everything just to see their family happy.

For people born under this sign 'there is no sex in the champagne room', in that they are not adepts of steamy, raw - passionate sexual adventures and they do not engage in one night stands. For them, intimate relations mean tender lovemaking and should 'occur' only in serious relationships, and ultimately to have as result procreation. In conclusion, you should attempt to look for someone born in the year of the Sheep only when you consider settling down and having a family, or else you are going to be rejected or hurt by these delicate and sweet-natured creatures.
