Rooster (21st of November, 2008)

By Alexandra Lupu

The bold, brave, alert and enterprising Rooster – the born business-man

"Great spirits have always encountered opposition from mediocre minds. The mediocre mind is incapable of understanding the man who refuses to bow blindly to conventional prejudices and chooses instead to express his opinions courageously and honestly."

Albert Einstein, New York Times, March 13, 1940

Personality: If the stingy Rat may be considered the embodiment of Father Goriot and the innocent Sheep may be seen as a romantic Jane Eyre or a dreamy Madame Bovary, then the Rooster is definitely the Don Quixote of the Chinese 'menagerie.' People born under this sign are maybe the most eccentric and flamboyant of all the twelve zoomorphic representations in the zodiac - even more bombastic than the authoritative Dragon -, dominated by powerful contrasts and out-of-the-ordinary features which make someone either love or hate him. In fact, all about the dashing and sometimes strange personality of the Rooster is based on a black-and-white view on life. For the straightforward individuals born in the year of the Rooster there are no sinuous or meandering ways of tackling a subject or dealing with any kind of situation, there are no gray 'shades', no half-way business and no in-between solutions. They even go as far as to consider diplomacy and politeness as being nuances of hypocrisy and slyness.

We cannot but admire the straightforwardness and frankness of those governed by this proud and vigorous domestic bird, especially as these type of moral values are more and more regarded as 'obsolete' by nowadays society based on the unwritten rule of the jungle. Nevertheless, as one can have too much of a good thing, their bluntness and roughness may unfortunately turn them into annoying and brutal companions.

The more loyal variant of the Dragon, the ever open and outspoken Rooster is great as a friend in that he will always speak his mind and will never let you down when you need him. This proud domestic bird epitomizes honesty and with him you always get what you see - no concealment, no ins and outs, because he is so amazingly plain-hearted. Reliability is another salient characteristic of those born under this sign - your secrets are safe with them because they never let the cat out of the bag on anything and they will keep their word to you, even if this involves catching the rainbow in the palm of their hands or bringing you the moon from sky-high.

Roosters also make very loyal, faithful, trustworthy and devoted friends and they are capable of giving up anything for those they care for. However, this perfect, faultless and beyond comparison buddy may become very annoying the moment his over-criticizing and too confident nature pierces through the surface. Along with the Dragon, his 'astrological brother', the Rooster is maybe the most grumpy, finical, acid and biting of all signs in the Chinese zodiac, being capable of finding flaws to the 'most '. When he starts a debate or argument with someone, he will not stop the controversy until he has literally demolished all the arguments of his 'enemy.' Very stubborn and with a very high self-esteem, such an individual will never admit that the others are right even when he realizes it and, likewise, he will never admit that he is wrong even if all the facts and evidence prove him so - this witty, daring and bold person will eventually find arguments to sustain his point of view.

When it comes down to his view on life, here we can again notice with the naked eye a striking contrast, because his personality is actually a strange amalgam and a misleading combination between a realist and an idealist. As weird as this may seem - and let me remind you that in the case of the Rooster the 'valences' of the ordinary and out-of-the-ordinary are completely reversed -, such a person can be the most pragmatic man on Earth, as he is very organized, neat, accurate, precise and tidy-minded, able of analyzing a problem from all angles and of taking very good decisions. But this pragmatic man is also the symbol of the ultimate idealist through his expectations from society and quixotic dreams in which he truthfully believes and which he will strive all his life to make true - too bad that the only one who cannot realize that his hopes are far too high to be reached is he himself.

Is the Rooster as independent and free-spirited as he likes to think about himself? Indeed, he is audacious and dauntless, but this does not make him spontaneous or non-conformist. Individuals born under this sign want to leave the impression that they are open-minded and they even believe it themselves, but in fact they are conservative and traditional at heart. Even if the Roosters would brag out and around that they are capable of doing the crazy things a Tiger or Horse would venture for in a flash, they would eventually find it useless and worthless. Not having a very wide-ranging mind and not being adaptable to all kinds of situations and conditions is indeed a flaw, but of what I know this did not hurt (not to say kill) anyone by now...only upset or annoy them once in a while.

However, the lack of open-mindedness does not make the Rooster less of a hero. With their choleric temper, aggressive and powerful, strong and daring, individuals born under this sign remain brave knights for their whole life, promoting all positive values and militating against betrayal, falseness, treachery and corruption. And they may succeed with their ranting in convincing the others that honesty and morality could change the world, but all that up to a certain point from which on it all becomes a fantasy and quixotic dream. Roosters have the tendency to indulge in. But we cannot judge them too harshly, because these idealistic individuals really and completely believe in what they 'preach'.

Like the impressive and beautifully-plumed bird under the auspices of which they have been born, individuals in the year of the Rooster are charismatic and attractive. Though not extremely gracious, refined or polite, they have a positive, very natural and agreeable demeanor and their innate magnetic charm makes them able to conquer the admiration of anyone. Radiant and dashing, independent and always self-confident, they are very neat and elegant and one will never see a Rooster dressed inadequately or cheaply, because the appearance is very important to them. Even if not shallow or superficial, Roosters see the tip and the bulk of the iceberg as equally important and do not favor one in the detriment of the other.

Strapping and stoutly-made, gallant and imposing, always neat, elegant and well-dressed, Roosters draw all eyes and attention like a magnet...and they simply love it! Indeed, one of the major downside of these people is that they are considerably vain and conceited and they like to be looked up, praised and admired. Flamboyant, bombastic and very boastful most of the times, they like to be flashy and blatant and all these, just because they are delighted when in the limelight, all eyes on them and flattered by the 'audience'.

However, we have to give it to them - as long as they do not become too critical or engage in never-ending and aggressive polemics, they have the right to be the stars of parties (of which they are very fond of, by the way) or any kind of social events and to 'boss the show' by all means and I will say it again at the risk of repeating myself: the Rooster is incredibly charming and irresistible. A very dynamic and lively presence, with a good sense of humor, witty and funny, very communicative and sociable, such an individual is great company and makes anyone feel at ease when near him.

Tidy-minded, neat and rigorous, bold and audacious, Roosters are born organizers and the prototype of the business man, except for their lack of tact and diplomacy. However, this is highly compensated by the fact that they master perfectly the art of speech and when they start debating a topic they win it not in most cases, but always. Along with the Oxen, people born in the year of this bold and well-built domestic bird are tireless and very industrious - when they put their mind to something they are determined to jump off the deep end in order to accomplish what they started for. Even if their goals in life are sometimes too high and humanly impossible to attain, they will do it all just to be able to sleep at night knowing that they have tried and fought for their dreams. One way or another, we should not blame such individuals for hitching their wagon to a star (or even more stars, in the case of Roosters), instead we should all admire their tenacity, cleverness, strong ambition and perseverance and maybe be jealous of all the energy and resources - of which they have plenty and more - they have been blessed with and put into pursuing their aims.

Roosters are also very observant, elaborate and meticulous. They have sharp eyes to notice the tiniest detail and when they work, they do it with much zeal, preciseness and tenacity. Furthermore, individuals born in the year of the Rooster are very ambitious and persistent when they put their mind to something, unlike the impatient Horse or Tiger who let themselves carried away by the enthusiasm of the moment and may leave tasks or jobs halfway done only to engage in another, more challenging ones.

The Rooster and Love

Individuals born in the year of the Rooster have a unique manner of loving and showing their affection. They are neither the romantic, nor the adventurous type, because the outspoken and straightforward Rooster prefers keeping it as simple as possible: no tricky mind games, no playing hard-to-get and no serenades underneath the balcony for their sweethearts or romantic dinners by the candlelight. Their view on love is similar to their view on life: it is all in black-and-white - they either like or cannot stand you -, no other nuances or shades of color 'allowed' in their life.

On the other hand, you should not let yourself fooled by the cold, strong and impenetrable facade people born in the year of the Rooster like to put up. These are individuals who prefer not wearing their hearts on their sleeves and do not express their emotions quite easily, but this does not make them turn tail to committing to a serious relationship. As a matter of fact, when they realize that they have fallen for someone and there is reciprocity, Roosters will be more than willing to get involved in a long-term relationship, settle down and have a family when the time is right.

However, do not imagine that a Rooster's heart can be conquered in the snap of a finger. It takes time and patience to win the trust and affection of such individuals, not because they are hesitant or skeptic, but simply because they are rather introvert and tight-lipped when it comes to their feelings and do not hand their hearts on a plate to their partners. In short, do not expect Roosters to declare their eternal love for you in touchy lyrics, because it is not in their nature to do this.

Though great with words, people under this sign mostly express their affection through facts and everyday actions. Living with a Rooster may be quite difficult because they are flamboyant and boastful, with a continual need to be in the center of attention, for which reason one has to continually tickle their ears and egos. They can also be a real nuisance with their overly criticizing nature, intolerance to others' opinions and straightforwardness to the point of brutality and ruthlessness. But none of us is perfect and these flaws do not make a Rooster partner less great or less worth having a relationship with, because those born in the year of this proud and dynamic domestic bird have a lot more to offer. If you are looking for a steady and faithful other half, then you may just have found the right person - Roosters are honest, communicative, tenacious and witty, extremely loyal and devoted.

When it comes down to intimate relations, Roosters are great as lovers. Very dynamic, agile and imaginative, they can offer their partners incredible and steamy nights in the bedroom, as they are masters of the art of seduction and sex. But do not expect them to be extremely cautious or gentle with your feelings, because they have a larger-than-life ego and even in the sack they want to have things their way or no way. Consequently, you can greatly enjoy fiery nights between the sheets with a Rooster as lover, as long as you do not mind being the 'dominated' one and you are OK with the fact that they do this out of egoistic reasons. Such individuals want to prove to themselves that they are the best in anything they may undertake - and they see 'boudoir' relations as an action just like any other.

Very passionate and with an extremely active sex drive, but not at all romantic, Roosters are not the kind to mistake a sexual affair for the beginning of a beautiful and long-lasting relationship. From this point of view, they are not the monogamous type and sexual attraction is not enough to make them keep to a relationship. If you do not win their hearts along with their physical desire, then they will leave you when you least expect for new challenges of the same kind.
