TV presenter Alexa Chung is set to blow the lid on the controversial world of sweatshop workers in a brand new reality show for Channel 4. The stylish presenter and former model will investigate the conditions that factory workers bear in Asia, - getting paid as little as 30 cents an hour - and she will do that by setting up her own sweatshop, right in the heart of London's Covent Garden.
In the program, provisionally called "Dress For Less", the girlfriend of Alex Turner from the Arctic Monkeys will apply what she finds in her own sweatshop to what really happens to the workers in Asia, working for well-know fashion label in the UK and the entire world, for infamously small amounts of money. The show guarantees to reflect reality, as the conditions that the workers in "Dress For Less" are subjected to are based on evidence obtained about those in the Far East.
Alexa Chung's "frockumentary" will uncover the truth behind how clothes are really made for some of Britain's biggest High Street fashion brands. the show will follow a staff of 15 volunteers, all fans of the budget gear, as they work for 60 hours over five days straight. The show is to be aired this year, although there isn't an official date set for its release.
Chung decided to take this action and make a reality show about fashion sweatshop because, although she is a fan of affordable fashion herself, the too-small prices of certain items made her wonder about the real production costs, "I love affordable fashion but I'm questioning the real price of £2 T-shirts and £8 dresses. I wanted to experience the reality of conditions in some of the Asian factories that supply our retailers - and it's an eye-opener."
