There is not one religion in Hollywood more controversial, contested and yet still so mysterious as when it first appeared in the '50s as Scientology is. Despite being an ideology developed by an author of sci-fi novels who not once stated that he would rather start his own cult to make millions instead of writing for a few cents a page as the publishers were paying him then, Scientology has many followers, among which probably the most (in)famous is superstar actor Tom Cruise.
They say the Church of Scientology forces its followers to willingly give up most part of their fortunes because it functions just like any other cult that makes money off its subjects. Even if that were true (which I'm not saying it is), it seems that not all Scientologists stand to lose from joining the defenders of the planet against the evil Xenu (for more about the hottie with the sexy name, just click here for a more detailed account), as Katie Holmes might actually make good bucks from it. Of course, that also means that her soul is lost for ever but, hey, you win some, you lose some... Life is not always fair, you know?!
According to the latest rumors flying about on the mighty Internets, Katie's marriage to Tom Cruise might have been legally arranged even before the two got to say their I Do's, at least from a financial point of view. We all know that Tom is one of the most high-ranking actors in all Hollywood and that, along the years, he has accumulated more than just a sizable fortune. So it was only natural that he had Katie Holmes sign a prenuptial agreement before making her his lawful wedded wife, right? Not so, says Andrew Morton, the guy who just published an unauthorized biography of the actor. Because Tom also included a stipulation in there that, in order for the prenup to be valid, Katie must become a Scientologist. Doomed!
Morton claims that Tom made Katie sign the contract that basically means that she willingly agreed to commit herself to his religion. In return, she will get, in the eventuality of a divorce, $3 million for each year that she spends married to the actor, but only if she plays by the strict rules imposed by the cult, which also include "never [using] psychiatric care or psychiatric drugs". "Scientologists have full control over her life", Morton concludes. But the best part of his claim is that the man who actually pushed Katie into this life-altering agreement was her very own father, Martin Holmes, who is also a lawyer.
Now, I would say that there is always some truth to every rumor but, because I love life and my precious little self too much and, frankly, I think that Scientology is not to be messed with, I'm gonna go ahead and say that you should not trust the rumors. You know Xenu is watching from above!
