"Brass Knuckles", the vehicle back to the top of the charts for the friendliest rapper of the 2000s is yet many months from dropping, but it is already being leaked on the Internet. Only days after the release of the video for "Party People", a new track off Nelly's album has made its way to the Internet. "Body On Me", a heavily Akon-assisted track is now online for fans to listen and get a fair idea about what the album will sound like.
For an album that was mediated as Nelly's most aggressive work to date, "Brass Knuckles" certainly does include tracks that would fare better with other artists that this one, like this latest leak. Nelly is meant to be fun and playful - at least that's the image he created for himself - but all he does with "Body On Me" is to keep under covers because of Akon's presence on the track.
While "Party People", a collaboration with Fergie that was released as the heading single from the album, was aggressive in a way we're already familiar with, "Body On Me" seems to have been conceived specifically for massive airplay. Its mellow and sensual notes fail to make a major impression with the listener except if they're being played over the radio in the background. As for Nelly's presence, it's barely felt save from some parts here and there and that only happens because Akon is already too resounding to not steal somebody else's thunder.
"Brass Knuckles" drops on June 24 - until then, keep an eye on this space for more. Click HERE to hear "Body On Me".
The Good
Anything new that comes from Nelly can't but be good, even if with some flaws here and there. Even if "Body On Me" is not the smashing club anthem as we might have expected because of "Party People", knowing that it stands great chances of striking gold over the radio should probably be enough consolation for Nelly fans.
The Bad
Akon's presence is so strongly felt on this track that it almost seems as if "Body On Me" is an Akon feat. Nelly song instead of the other way around. We can only hope that it won't be released as a single or, if it is, that it won't get a video as well.
The Truth
"Body On Me" is a decent effort but, if compared to Nelly's previous "Party People", it does not rise to the expectations. In other words, it's a fairly good song but you won't be finding yourself humming to it even after five or six listens.
