Celebrate with a (expensive) bottle of bubbly

The Perrier-Jouet bottles of champagne that amount to a year's paycheckRecords for prices get broken every year, as more and more luxury products aim for that “most expensive” title in the world. Many are just for show while a select few actually are worth the large sums of money accompanying their names. This is the case with the limited edition 12 bottle box-set of Perrier-Jouet champagne up for sale tomorrow. The price tag? A “mere” 4,166 euros ($6,485) a bottle or a grand total of 50,000 euros ($ 78,944) for the whole box.

The box set contains 12 bottles of customized champagneBut don’t think that you can access your eBay account and put up an offer by placing another mortgage on your house. The makers are eyeing a very selective market from the get-go, with just a “community of super-rich” consumers from a few selected countries (the US, Britain, Japan, China, Russia, Switzerland and France) that will number just 100 people.

Only 100 lucky people will get to taste the limited edition Perrier-Jouet champagneThe trick is that each buyer will be able to create his own type of champagne according to his preferences. He will have to come to Epernay (a location in eastern France), the place where Perrier-Jouet make their champagne and talk to the cellar master down there and decide on the cocktail of wines of different ages that will go into his 12 bottles. On top of that, the makers will generously offer their new customer a storage nest for the following eight months in their own cellars.

So chances are that if you haven’t received your invitation yet, you’re not among the 100 super rich people from the aforementioned countries. Big surprise! Oh, and in case you were wondering, the previous record for the most expensive bottle of champagne was that rappers favorite, Dom Perignon, which in 2005 went down for a hefty 12,000 euros a bottle. Granted, it was a 3 litre bottle, so a few more of your friends could enjoy your wealth.
